They’re Coming for You, Ben: Night of the Living Dead as a Reflection of Late-60’s American Malaise
Thursday, October 30th, 2025, 6-9 pm
Haunted Installation Opens at 6 pm
Screening Begins at 7 pm
Content Warning: Please note that this film contains depictions of violence, cannibalism, and brief nudity.
This event features a screening of George A. Romero’s ground-breaking modern horror film Night of the Living Dead (1968) and a haunted installation that explains the film’s background and impact on the horror genre. The research for the installation, developed by students in the Horror Film and Otherness course at Grinnell College, details how Romero’s film utilizes the aesthetics of 1960s television and radio broadcast – especially those broadcasts depicting the Vietnam War and the “Long, Hot Summer” of 1967 – to create a sense of realism that modernized the monster movie genre and reshaped the figure of the zombie, influencing numerous films and TV series in the years to come.

Before and after the performance, the installation is interactive. But to respect the instruments and Balinese culture, please do not step over Gamelan instruments or play with your feet. Effects pedals may be touched with feet.
This performance will be sonicly and visually noisy. Although we will never discriminate by age and will always allow for all ages to attend, some material and images may be scary for humans under 18-years-old.
Balinese duo, ghOstMiSt, calls for you to think about how to build culture from ruins and dismemberment. In Bali, Ngeruak, is a ceremony where you ask permission from the land and its stewards to build. To build structures; to build sociality; to build community; to build family; to build a better future. ghOstMiSt seeks to appease doom by basking in slowness and rhythmic subdivision, nesting dynamic beginnings within shifting climates. We are here to bask in schismogenic feminism and elevate the presence of forgotten women.

ghOstMiSt is a Balinese experimental duo that uses reflexive improvisation as way to interrogate cultural contradiction and reclaim performance place. Dewa Ayu Eka Putri and I started this duo as a critique of traditional frames of value judgement. By enacting performative inquiries of Balinese-ness we question spiritual and cosmological epistemologies of performance. It is important that we teach through community-based methods and engage in diverse participation in efforts to create works of art that promote creativity, while understanding historical privilege to address social and philosophical issues.

When Georges Bataille debuted formlessness 95 years ago in Surrealist magazine Documents, I doubt he expected a handful of Iowan college students to take on his case. His initial conception of the idea was veiled, though a shaking up of the previously unsullied sphere of “Fine Art” shines through. Hodgepodge intends to chase this tenuous light, following these wavering beams through each gnarled nook and cranny. Through this chase, we strive to answer the slippery question, what forms does formlessness take?
